Product Description
Now here’s another one from a recent group out of Perry Michigan. This WWI Krieger Ehrenzeichen in Eisen (Warrior decoration in Iron) is in wonderful uncleaned condition and is complete with functioning pin and catch. The obverse depicts the Imperial Crown with a wreath of Laurel leaves encompassing the initials “EL” for the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse. The decoration was instituted on March 13, 1917, the 25th anniversary of the Grand Duke being in office. This decoration was awarded on a vary limited basis with only about 2000 soldiers earning the medal. The recipient should previously have received the Iron Cross, the Hessian bravery medal and be wounded at the front. Therefore the award earned the nickname “The Bloody Ludwig”. This award exhibits a great patina with loads of charm. A scarce and iconic piece for your WWI display.
