Product Description
Here’s a great one of a kind German Red Cross standarte . This standarte came the son of a young Infantryman that went missing in Italy October 11, 1944. It turns out he wasn’t “missing” at all, the Germans had taken him prisoner. After his liberation in May 1945 from the Vilsbiburg labor camp he picked up a couple souvenirs. This standarte and the Bauernschaft standarte (in another listing) were what he took. The standarte is in wonderful condition with some light mothing and measures 53 1/2 x 49 1/2 inches. The eagle on these is stunningly powerful. The hardware is almost always missing on these but amazingly this one still has five of the seven rings. The corner patches measure 8 x 9 1/2 inches and are simply marked “Vilsbiburg” making this standarte one of a kind. I am posting a shot of the vet’s “Application for Living Ex-Prisoner of War Compensation for Compulsory Labor and/or Inhumane Treatment” to show all the places he was dragged around to as a prisoner. A spectacular item for the advanced collector. The two standartes are listed separately but if you take both I will knock $100 off the total.
